In terms of the 6 months we have some flexibility as these don't need to be all used until the end of 2020. So if you haven't started yet - then leave it for now, the latest you can start is July 2020.

Those that have started the 6 months or on the 12 months we plan on delivering as much as we can online and offer option of open session where you can come into the studio and have access but we need to have low numbers on this and still work out how this will work, please keep an eye on your emails for updates.

The issue comes to us as a small business if we start to have sales from 2020 carry into 2021 - honestly - our cash flow will not survive. We simply wouldn't survive financially most likely having to close the doors forever. This is such a horrible situation - we don't have all the answers, and we don't know how this is all going to go - I don't think anyone does. This doesn't help you, its not your fault - it's not our either, we are all just here trying to make sense of this and be here for you after this settles.

The online sessions we are trying to keep a sense of normality and service to you all, and also keep the teachers here getting paid. By providing online classes the teachers here keep getting an income and we keep delivering for you. But if this isn't going to suit - there would be no point in us delivering anything.

We ask for your help, patience and support. We are sorry we can't promise you extensions to your memberships - we hope you see the amazing value of what we offer here at TYPP and how much value your membership offers.  We hope we can see you back to normal very soon.

All passes are non-refundable.

This is really difficult for all involved in this, we will review this ongoing and have some flexibility with class passes for adding a short extension. What that looks like right now - honestly we don't know. We have no idea how long we have to close for - we have as much information as you.

But to stress if we had to promise the earth all that will happen is we simply wont survive financially most likely having to close the doors forever. This is such a horrible situation - we don't have all the answers, and we don't know how this is all going to go - I don't think anyone does.

What is pilates?

Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Ladder Barrel and Wunda Chair (please book in for a 1-1 with Megan if you'd like to use the last 3 pieces of apparatus). With its system of pulleys and springs, handles and straps, the apparatus can provide either resistance or support, depending on your needs.

Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. His method was influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method, which he called "contrology" – for several decades.

Who is pilates for?

Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes. The apparatus can be used to provide support for beginners and people with certain medical conditions, as well as resistance for people looking to challenge their body.

If you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury, seek advice from your GP or a health professional before starting any exercise programme.

What are the health benefits of pilates?

There are many reports on the health benefits of pilates. Practitioners say regular pilates can improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension. For elite athletes, including dancers, pilates can complement training by developing whole-body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury.

Can pilates help reduce back pain?

There's some evidence that pilates can provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain. The use of apparatus enables someone with back pain to perform exercises with support.

For the exercises to be effective, they need to be tailored to the individual.

Can pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is classed as a muscle-strengthening activity, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. Classes can vary in intensity: they can be gentle, or dynamic and offer a solid workout.

Can I injure myself doing pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, so injuries are uncommon. However, it's important to find a qualified teacher and a class suited to your level of fitness and ability.

Pilates teachers are not medically qualified so, if you're recovering from injury, you're advised to check with your GP or relevant health professional on the suitability of certain exercises or movements before starting a class.

What's the difference between pilates and yoga?

While the methods are different, pilates and yoga both develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and good breathing technique.

Both systems emphasise the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga places more emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation. Pilates is performed both on apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga doesn't require any equipment.

Pilates exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the static poses associated with yoga.

What's the difference between apparatus and mat work?

Joseph Pilates originally devised more than 500 exercises for his system, of which 34 were mat exercises.

Mat work may involve traditional pilates equipment, such as magic circles or hand weights, as well as non-pilates gear, such as stretch bands, gym balls and foam rollers. Pilates with apparatus uses equipment designed by Joseph Pilates, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel.

Mat and apparatus pilates can be adapted to suit different levels of fitness and ability. However, if you cannot lie down on a mat for whatever reason, the apparatus can provide alternative ways to exercise.  (courtesy of NHS.uk)

Reformer

If it's Pilates you want to get started with then Reformer Pilates is superior to mat based Pilates as the repertoire of exercises available is greatly increased providing far more variety.

Reformer exercises work muscles through a large range of motion which is ideal for building and toning muscles as well increasing stability through the joints.

It works more areas than matwork as matwork is mostly core whereas reformer works the entire body and more the peripheral muscles of the arms and legs.

Reformer Pilates is great for rehab purposes too as it allows you to exercise in a horizontal plane of motion and not be vertically loaded and weight bearing through their legs.

For example if you have had knee surgery or a knee injury, this horizontal plane enables you to strengthen the muscles of the leg through a larger range of motion using a lighter resistance than their body weight, speeding up recovery through controlled movement.

Reformer Pilates can be used as a sport specific cross training tool. Reformer Pilates works on core stabilisation which is vital to any athlete as well as muscle endurance, lactate tolerance, peripheral joint stability, muscle strength, balance, co-ordination and much more.

Our Kick Start Reformer Pilates package is all you need to get started on the reformer.

  1. For your first class try to arrive 10 minutes before class starts ready to exercise so we can register your details if you have not registered online, show you where everything is, and have a chat. After this, try and arrive 5 minutes before each class and check in at the reception desk, even if you have made an online booking.
  2. Please try to arrive ready for your class. We have small changing facilities, but we recommend you arrive ready.
  3. If you are participating in a Hot class please bring a towel – don’t worry if you forget, towels can be hired for £1 from reception. Also remember water – we stock bottled water at £1 per bottle for your convenience, but feel free to bring your own. Drink plenty of water before, during and after class. Water is your new best friend!
  4. Practice on an empty tummy, try to eat no less than 2 hours before class. If you do need a quick pick me up, we suggest natures liquid energy- fruit juice! to keep you going without making you feel uncomfortable during practice.
  5. We ask you to kindly remove your shoes as you enter the Mat room and place them in the shoeboxes in reception. We will look after them for you whilst you practice. Outdoor shoes can carry nasty outdoor things into the facility; we don’t want to share that on our yoga mats!
  6. TRY EVERY CLASS.  Variety is the spice of life; we have tried to offer you a good choice of well-balanced classes. You may find a favorite routine / teacher, or like us, you may love them all!
  7. The studio is based on the 2nd floor at 32 Portman Street, Glasgow, G41 1EJ. Parking after 6pm directly outside the studio is free of charge. If you are coming before 6pm please park at the junction next to Rise as that side of the street you can park all day for free.

Pre natal (and post natal!) on the Reformer is a great place to ensure you stay active during your pregnancy and after. Using the Reformer is an ideal way to keep your pelvis stable and also build pelvic floor strength.

We have many mums-to-be can taking part in our Pilates classes all through their pregnancy. We require mums-to-be to book in for a 1-1 appointment with our Studio Owner Sarah Jane at each trimester.

We generally recommend Pilates Reformer as it is much easier to do while expecting than Mat Pilates. The Reformer machine is higher off the ground (easier to get on and off) you can pretty much do most of the class without any issue and as long as your pregnancy remains low risk - our mums work with us right up to due date.

Our Kickstart Reformer Pilates package is the best way to get you started as it contains a 1-1 with SJ plus group class passes.

If you are less than 12 weeks pregnant you'll no doubt be feeling low on energy, possibly sick. So it might be best to book once you're at that 12 weeks stage coming into your second trimester - your energy will come back. It's really a personal preference.

For post natal, you are welcome to join us 6 weeks after normal delivery and generally 12 weeks with c-section.

Hello! 👋

Jump in here and get to see who we all are HERE

What yoga classes do you offer at TYPP?

Information about our classes are here.

What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing.

The practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways.

What are the health benefits of yoga?

Dozens of scientific trials of varying quality have been published on yoga.

While there's scope for more rigorous studies on its health benefits, most studies suggest yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity, especially strength, flexibility and balance.

There's some evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression and stress.

Can yoga help prevent falls?

Yes. Yoga improves balance by strengthening your lower body – particularly your ankles and knees – thereby reducing your chances of falling.

However, falls may sometimes be caused by a health condition, in which case it's a good idea to see your GP or visit a falls clinic at a local hospital.

Can yoga help with arthritis?

Yoga is popular with people with arthritis for its gentle way of promoting flexibility and strength.

Some research suggests yoga can reduce pain and mobility problems in people with knee osteoarthritis. However, some yoga moves are not suitable for people with the condition.

Find a teacher who understands arthritis and can adapt movements for individual needs, especially if you have replacement joints, and always check with a doctor or physiotherapist to find out if there are any movements to avoid.

Am I too old for yoga?

Definitely not. People often start yoga in their 70s, and many say they wish they had started sooner. There are yoga classes for every age group. Yoga is a form of exercise that can be enjoyed at any time, from childhood to your advanced years.

Do I have to be fit to do yoga?

No. You can join a class suitable for your fitness level. For example, to join a mixed-ability yoga class, you need to be able to get up and down from the floor. Some yoga classes are chair-based.

Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

Not necessarily. Yoga will improve your flexibility and help you go beyond your normal range of movement, which may make performing your daily activities easier.

Can I injure myself doing yoga?

Yoga-related injuries are uncommon. Some injuries can be caused by repetitive strain or overstretching.

But yoga is the same as any other exercise discipline – it's perfectly safe if taught properly by people who understand it and have experience.

It's advisable to learn from a qualified yoga teacher and choose a class appropriate to your level.

What style of yoga should I do?

There are many different styles of yoga, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Yoga Flow (check out Yoga @ TYPP). Some styles are more vigorous than others, while some may have a different area of emphasis, such as posture or breathing. Many yoga teachers develop their own practice by studying more than one style.

No style is necessarily better or more authentic than any other. The key is to choose a class appropriate for your fitness level.
